Moving to Bordeaux and South West France

The ocean, the vineyards, human-sized cities and a gentler pace: South West France appeals to more and more international families. Here is how to choose where to settle.

Bordeaux

A UNESCO World Heritage city, Bordeaux is around two hours from Paris by high-speed train. The Chartrons, Caudéran and Jardin Public neighbourhoods are popular with families; the Arcachon Bay and Cap Ferret are less than an hour away. The city has bilingual schools and an international school.

Biarritz and the Basque Country

Surfing, gastronomy and Basque culture: Biarritz offers an exceptional setting, with its own airport and Spain half an hour away. Anglet, Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz complete a much sought-after coastline.

La Rochelle and the Île de Ré

A bright harbour town, a life lived by bike and the Île de Ré across the bridge. La Rochelle stands out for its quality of life and energy.

Cognac and the Charente

Among vineyards and cognac houses, the Charente offers beautiful properties and a peaceful life, particularly appreciated by British buyers. Angoulême high-speed station is close by.

Toulouse

The 'Pink City', Europe's aerospace capital, attracts international engineers and executives. The Pyrenees are within reach for the weekend.

Good to know

Character properties (chartreuses, Charente houses, Basque villas) often sell before being advertised. As for schools, the international offer is more concentrated than in Paris: it is worth considering when choosing the city.
